D.L. "Tony" Burgess of Sissonville, former owner of Tony's Exxon, went to be with his loving Savior on Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at Hubbard Hospice House after an extended illness.
Tony, 68, was born December 3, 1938, in Dunbar, Kanawha County, and was the son of the late Virgil L. and Althea Gandee Burgess. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Doris Sweeney Welling, and half brother, Ted Gandee.
He was a respected businessman for 26 years, owning two Exxon stations and a car wash. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. All who knew him knew he was an honest, hardworking, caring person.
Tony had diversified interests in fishing, boating, and miniature golf, but had a special interest in clogging. He taught many the art of clogging, as well as leading his clogging team to many awards. He and his team danced at the Vandalia Gathering each year. He also enjoyed traveling and going for drives, just to find a place to eat.
He was a member of Grace Church of the Nazarene, under the leadership of the late Rev. Harold Runyan.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Camille Cantrell Burgess; daughter, April Given and her husband, Ed; son, Rodney and his wife, Susan; sister, June Burgess Ward and her husband, Chuck; grandson, Evan Given; and granddaughter, Hannah Burgess, all of Charleston.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 27, at Long & Fisher Funeral Home, Sissonville, with the Rev. Bill Bartlett officiating.
Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311.
The family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful staff at Hospice for the loving care provided during the last days.
