Ruth Virginia Gray Pugh crossed on December 24, 2008 at Hubbard Hospice House with the same grace and courage that she exhibited throughout her life.
She was born March 6, 1915 in Preston County WV.and later moved to Cass, Pocahontas County, WV. During WWII, while in nurses training in Ronceverte WV, she met her husband Robert T. Pugh of Greenbank WV.
It is difficult to count the many selfless contributions she made to her family, friends, and community as she went about them all in her quiet humble way. Some of these include a Hospice Volunteer, a former Girl Scout Leader, volunteer at libraries and food pantries, taught exercise classes for the elderly, made clothing for Salvation Army Toy Drive Teddy Bears and much more. In fact, Ruth won numerous awards for her many volunteer efforts.
She was well known not only for her craft ability, but also for her incredible crotchet talent. Ruth could look at a picture and then duplicate that picture in crochet. Many lined up to take crotchet classes from her. She was a can-do person who didn''t let many things stand in her way of accomplishing any task she set out to do. At age 90, she decided she needed bookshelves in her home. True to her form, she purchased the lumber and single-handedly built a sturdy set of shelves herself.
Even in times of great illness she had a kind word and a beautiful smile for all who came in contact with her. Many commented about her incredible grace. If you knew her, then you knew a true angel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, Maye Hopkins Gray and Jerry Martin Gray, daughter, Mrs. Ruth Sawyers, brothers Art, Frank and Jerry and one sister Mary Anna Gray.
Surviving include Daughter Ms. Wilda Harvit of Miami Beach Fla; Granddaughters Mrs. Pamela Harvit (Bill) of Charleston, ;Angela Stowers (Brad) of Fla.; Veronica Law (John) who just returned from serving with troops in Iraq; one Great Grandson, Doug Law, and many nieces and nephews.
True to her giving nature, Ruth has donated her home to Habitat for Humanity. It was her request to be cremated, so there will be a memorial celebration of her remarkable life in the spring during the dedication of her home to that organization. The date and time of the dedication ceremony will be made at a later date.
The family would like to thank all the compassionate people who helped Ruth including the incredible nurses and staff at Hubbard Hospice House, her friends/family at Charleston Gardens, and members of McKinnon Presbyterian Church.
