Obituary

Roger Allen Beane, 70, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2024, in hospice care at CAMC Memorial Hospital. Roger was born in San Diego, California in 1954 to JoAnn Calhoun Beane and the late Golden S. Beane Jr. He was raised initially by his grandparents, Golden and Cordie Beane of Sissonville. Later, he moved to Naoma, WV, to be with his father Golden and his wife Velma where he attended Marsh Fork High School. There, he spent much of his time at their general store and at the youth center. Afterwords he moved to Florida with his father Golden and Velma and graduated from Lake Worth High School in 1973. After graduation, Roger made the nearly 1,000-mile journey from Lake Worth, FL, to Charleston, WV, in just two days on his 1972 Honda CB 450 motorcycle. No small fete today, even more so for 1973 on mostly two lane black-top roads.

Roger worked many jobs in his youth including picking Connecticut shade tobacco in the Connecticut River Valley, later at the Shipping Department at The Diamond Department store in his items in their vast inventory. Later he worked at Interactive Data, Inc. where he provided maintenance for computers.

He was an avid photographer at our Wolford family reunions at The Breaks in Virginia or near Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina where we attended the Calhoun Reunion. Roger loved being in nature and spending days in parks and forests. He fed raccoons and opossums to the point that he could photograph them freely, even hand feeding grub worms to wild frogs. He named his favorite, Mr. Green Cheeks.

He adored West Virginia's many state parks – taking photographs of animals and flowers – always careful to leave no trace of having been there. Once after visiting the New River Gorge Bridge before its completion, after crossing the canyon, his uncle's used United Fuel Gas Co. van caught fire and burned completing a memorable day.

A gentle soul who never met a stranger, Roger would give you the shirt off his back. He loved nature – collecting old cameras and projectors, as well as fossils, rocks, crystals, old glass, and pop bottles (including his favorite, Dr. Pepper). He loved motorcycles, all types of music, and held a special place for David Bowie and his albums "Ziggy Stardust" and "The Spiders from Mars' but mostly, Roger loved his family.

Roger was a huge fan of WVU football and basketball. He even became a reluctant Marshall fan after his daughter attended the university there. His favorite TV show was "Survivor" where he won $20,000 and a trip to NYC playing on-line. He became friends with many of the contestants and had a large group of friends through the game. Always sharing his good fortune, he made the trip to Manhattan and gave his daughter his winnings.

In addition to his father, Roger is preceded in death by his sister Debra Beane of Sissonville, grandparents Claude and Maxie Calhoun of Sissonville and Golden S. Beane Sr. and wife Cordie of Sissonville.

Roger is survived by his daughters Jennifer and Stacey Beane and granddaughter Nora, his mother, JoAnn Calhoun, brothers Rick Beane and John Michael Earley as well as extended family including Uncle Larry Calhoun, aunts Betty (Charlie) Kirkwood, Cay Wood of Charleston, ex-wife Stephanie Fisher and her daughter Savannah Smith and her children.

A celebration of life will be held at 3:00p.m. on Friday, August 9, 2024, at the Calvary Church of the Nazarene.

Friends and family are encouraged to wear their favorite WVU attire to the services.
