Richard E. Slater, 58, of Charleston passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 12, 2009, surrounded by family and friends. Rick was the son of the late Guy Richard Slater and Lois Frazier Slater. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, C.O. and Molly Bumgardner Slater and Frank and Sadie Kennedy Frazier.
He was a 1968 graduate of Sissonville High School and a 1972 graduate of West Virginia University. Rick had very generously donated to WVU for the support of his alma mater.
Rick moved to California where he worked for Atari. He later went to work for Maxim Integrated Products as their VP and CEO. He helped take the company from "start-up" to a global corporation. Rick was a very loving, kind and generous person who will be sadly missed by family and friends alike.
Rick is survived by his companion, Randy Howard of Charleston; his brothers, Guy Daniel "Danny" Slater, Jimmy and Tanya Slater; and his very special sisters, Sara Jane Sutton of Merritt Island, Fla., and her husband, Ross, Sue Ellen Slater and her companion, Chris Garnes, of Sissonville. His nieces and nephews are Cassie and Laci Slater of Sissonville, Steven and Kara Beth Slater, also of Sissonville, and Emily Sue and Evan Sutton of Merritt Island, Fla.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, in the Slater family cemetery, Allens Fork, Sissonville, with Father Olof Scott officiating. Burial will directly follow the service.
The family will receive friends and family between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. Friday at Long & Fisher Funeral Home, 6837 Sissonville Drive, Sissonville.
The family would like to thank the staff of CAMC General Hospital for their care and compassion and all of those who stayed by Rick's side.
