Mary was born on December 17th, 1952 to Denny and Mary Burdette (Elmore) of Sissonville, WV. Mary’s biological mother died during childbirth so she was raised by her maternal grandmother Dollie (Canter) Elmore. Even though she grew upalongside her aunts and uncles she was treated just like a sister. Mary had six brothers and two sisters. Since she was the youngest she was given the nicknames Lil’ Mary or Sissy.

She was very funny and had a witty sense of humor. Even during the advanced stages of dementia Mary was quick with a remark or comeback that would always make those around her laugh. She loved to tell stories and talk about her life growing up and her family.

Mary attended Garnet Career Center where she obtained her GED and completed Laboratory Services and Phlebotomy Training.

She took a job with CAMC Memorial in Charleston, WV. Marystarted her career as a Nurse’s Assistant, then moved into Phlebotomy and spent time working in the Blood Bank. After she left the lab she took a position as a Certified Health Unit Clerk in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. She was the only CHUC in the building. She had a very strong work ethic and was recognized for her perfect attendance on several occasions.Mary enjoyed her time working at CAMC and made many friends there along the way. She retired from CAMC after 42 years of service.

Mary attended and was a member of Tupper’s Valley Missionary Baptist Church for most of her life. She enjoyed Bible study and singing in church. She loved Jesus, her Lord and Savior and wasn’t ashamed to let it be known. She later attended Utah Mission/New Testament Church.

One of her favorite past times was gardening and planting flowers. She planted a garden every year where she grew tomatoes, cucumbers, green onions, squash and green beans. She canned a lot of her home grown vegetables. She also liked to grow her own spices.

Mary loved flowers and planted a lot around her home. She had an array of different colors of irises, begonia’s and rose bushes. She also grew fruit trees and snowball bushes.

She also loved to go blackberry and raspberry picking in the summer. She would talk about going months before the time arrived. She always tried to pick enough berries share with her family and friends and to make jam. She also liked to look for Molly Moochers.

Mary enjoyed baking for family and friends. She would sell fruitcakes and fudge at Christmas and peanut butter eggs and candy at Easter as a way to supplement her income. She always worked hard to make sure her family, especially her daughters Sherry and Amy had everything they needed, and most of the times what they wanted.

She loved to travel and had visited many places around the world including Germany, Switzerland, France the Netherlandsand the Bahamas as well as all across the United States.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years Romie“Harley” Patton, mother and father Mary Burdette (Elmore) and Denny Burdette, her grandmother that raised her as her own Dollie (Canter) Elmore and grandfather Arnold Elmore, sixbrothers, George “Herbert”, John, Andrew “Andy”, James, Willard “Winky” Elmore, Bubby Burdette and two sisters, Rebecca “Arbutus” Pritt and JoAnn Barnes and Gathie Elmore whom she considered her sister.
