On Friday, April 13, 2012, Juanita "June" Older relied on her precious, loving Savior one last time on this earth to carry her into her new eternal home that He promised her. She rejoiced as she met her cherished husband and other loving family members upon her arrival. She was born on August 8, 1922, and had been a resident of Frogs Creek, Charleston, for her entire life.
June spent her childhood on a farm surrounded by seven brothers and sisters with her mother. Her father was killed in an automobile accident in November of 1929 when she was seven years old. She worked outside the home for a brief time at Fletcher Glass Company in Dunbar before marrying Flavius Older in June of 1944. They made their home on a farm at Frogs Creek.
June was a Christian and a member of Kelly's Creek Community Church, where she taught Sunday and Bible school. Many former pupils fondly remember "Miss June." She was also known as a church staple, farmer, hostess, and babysitter. She was a wonderful mother and a woman of many talents. For example, she helped her grandfather fire his moonshine still when she was just a girl. She could decorate the glass produced at Fletcher with beautiful designs. She was the guiding force of the family, and never refused to help a neighbor in need. She particularly enjoyed working in her yard and flowerbeds. She often sang hymns while working or sewing. She made bona fide feasts and had extended family Christmas Eve dinners for many years. Many of her dishes and deserts will never be duplicated.
She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-four years, Flavius "Cuz" F. Older; her parents, Della Hamilton (Wilkinson) and C.C. Hamilton; and her stepfather, Curtis B. Wilkinson. She was also the last to depart of her seven brothers and sisters, Ida, Annie, Christina, Ava "Bubbles," Helen, Hillard and Billy.
Left to cherish all of the wonderful memories she made with us are her two children, Vollie Older and Elizabeth Older; four grandchildren, Kimberly Houck, whom she resided with for seven years and joyously lived life with her great-grandchildren, Jamie George, Jacob Older Green and Emma Older Green; four great-grandchildren, Brittni Houck, Brett Houck, Nathan Lyttle, and James Aaron George. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
June's family would like to express a special thank you to Mrs. Brenda Thomas and her husband, Red, for the care and kindness shown mother during the short time she had been with them in their personal care home.
A celebration of June's life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2012, with Raymond Dale Stonestreet and Pastor David Jones officiating the service. Entombment will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Mausoleum.
