John "Johnnie" Stanford Jones, 70, of Pocatalico went home to be with the Lord on December 14, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born November 1, 1939, in Madison, Boone County, and was a son of the late John Arthur "J.A." Jones and Julia Myers Jones.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, JoAnn Rhodes Jones of Pocatalico; daughters, Joetta and her husband, Jerry Bigsby, of Muskegon, Mich., Janet and her husband, Phil Wagner, of St. Albans, Jackie Zuckerman of Nashville, Tenn., and son-in-law Bill Zuckerman of Nashville, Tenn., Julie Williams of Scott Depot and son-in-law, Steve Williams; grandchildren, Stacey and husband, Josh Mills, of Springfield, Va., Jessica and husband, Shawon Burgess, of Camp Lejeune, N.C., Megan Williams of South Charleston, Stephanie Zuckerman of Nashville Tenn., John Tyler "J.T." Williams of Scott Depot, and William "Willie" Zuckerman of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters, Helen Golod of Stuart Fla., Carolyn and her husband, Toney Young, of Madison, and Marion Thornton of Madison; mother-in-law, Annabelle Rhodes of Pocatalico; brother-in-law, Larry and his wife, Grace Rhodes, of Pocatalico; several nieces and nephews; and our cat Delilah, his constant companion during his illness.
He had 30 years of service with Kroger, having worked as a meat cutter, then managing several stores.
John was a member of Washington Masonic Lodge 58, St. Albans, Beni Kedem Temple, Charleston, Scottish Rite Bodies, Charleston, IOOF 80, Poca, and the North Hills Baptist Church. John loved going RV'ing and meeting new people and was a member of several camping clubs. He also loved watching NASCAR on TV and his favorite driver was #24, Jeff Gordon.
The family would like to thank Dr. Amed Khalid, nurses and staff at the David Lee Cancer Center, nurses and staff at CAMC Memorial Hospital 5 South, Dr. Bruce Haupt, Alicia Dingess, nurses and staff at St. Francis Hospital, and Hospice Care nurses and staff.
Special thanks go to caregivers, Laurie Mead and Marion Thornton, and to our family, friends and church family for the food, prayers and many cards during John's illness.
Most thanks go to our pastor, Mike Harper, who was always there for us with his support and prayers through John's many surgeries and this last battle with cancer.
A celebration of John's life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 17, at North Hills Baptist Church, 6108 Bobolink Lane. Burial will be in Goshen Cemetery, Kentuck, with Masonic graveside services.
A gathering of his family and friends will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Long & Fisher Funeral Home, 6837 Sissonville Drive, Sissonville, where a Scottish Rite service will be held at 8:30 p.m.
