Obituary

JOHN WILSON HARRISON, 89, died on February 3, 2026, after several days in the hospital.

He was born February 23, 1936, to the late Milford D. and Effie Mae (Hill) Harrison.  John spent his early childhood in Jackson County, before moving with his family to the Sissonville area.

John graduated from Sissonville High School in 1954, where he made All-Valley Conference while playing for the undefeated 1953 SHS Football Team.  He was selected as The Charleston Gazette's Player of the Week for his outstanding performance against Dunbar.   In track and field, he won both the Discus Throw and Shot Put at the 1954 Valley Conference Meet, and he was also a standout on the SHS Basketball Team.   John's athletic accomplishments continued long after high school.  He made a hole‑in‑one in golf, won numerous bowling awards, bowled a 298 game and a 700+ series at age 80, and even competed in a track and field meet at Laidley Field at age 81.

He served his country in the U.S. Army and retired from FMC Corporation after many years of service.  John liked classic vehicles and owned many over the years, including two Corvettes and, most recently, a Mustang convertible.

The most important event of John's life came in 2001, when he became a follower of Jesus Christ.  Because of this, our grief is eased by the hope that we will see John again.

John was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Gail (Johnson) Harrison.  They were dedicated parents and liked to sing a duet which included the words, "You gave me your love Lord, and a fine family, thank you Lord, for your blessings on me".  John is survived by his two sons, Stephen John (Kristen) and Jamie Kent (Elizabeth); six grandchildren (Lydia [Brandon Billings], Brianna, Mariana, Patrick, Benjamin, and Maggie Joy); and two great-grandchildren (Silas and Gabriel).  He is also survived by a sister (Joann [Darrell Parsons]); brother (Jim [Susan]); and several nieces and nephews.  He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ella Mae [Carroll Monday].

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Calvary Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor James Ellis officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Floral Hills Garden of Memories. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in John's memory be made to a Christian ministry of your choice. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.longfisherfuneralhome.com.
