Obituary

Jerry Keith Given, 83, of Charleston passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 3, 2016 at Hubbard Hospice House surrounded by his loving family.

Born December 19, 1932 in Widen; he was the first son of the late Bernice Given Collison and step-father French Collison,. Jerry was lovingly raised by his late grandparents Ward and Allie Given.

Jerry served our country in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the Strange Creek Masonic Lodge #130, worked for Elk River Coal and Lumber Company and retired from Kroger after 32years. Jerry loved to travel with family; he was a WVU football fan and enjoyed going to games. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. Jerry looked forward to spending time with the guys at deer camp every year. He never lost his love of Clay County and his memories of home. He went back to visit often. Jerry loved to meet new people and engage in conversation with friends as well as strangers.

In addition to his parents and grandparents, Jerry is preceded in death by his sister, Ann Moyer.

Jerry lived his life utterly devoted to his family. He will be missed by his loving wife of 60 years Barbara Given; His oldest son and best friend Keith Given (Julia), his independent "other daughter" Beth Shaffer (John), and the baby Kathy Given (Sherri); honorary son Mike Walker (Debbie); sisters, Jean Seacrest, Aileen Hedrick, Kay Daugherty, Louis Lanham, Josephine Wenger, Jennie Pennington, Lyndra Lambert, Janie Damron, and Martha Meadows; brother, Raymond "Bud" Collison; cousin, dear friend, and "little brother" Arthur Ward Vaughan; grandchildren who were the absolute joy of his life Hillary Given, Jessi Given, Sara Shaffer, Robert Shaffer, and Evan Shaffer; great grandchildren, Jonathan, Landon, Ethan and Chapel; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8pm on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Long & Fisher Funeral Home.

Funeral Service will be at 11am on Friday, July 8, 2016 at Long & Fisher Funeral Home with Rev. Kevin Walker and Rev. Tim Dixon officiating.

Interment will immediately follow at Given Cemetery in Given, WV.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of Jerry''s love of Clay County and the memories of home that he held dear the family suggests that donations be made to the Clay County Emergency Relief Fund. These donations are being collected at the Charleston YWCA on 114 Quarrier St, Donations by mail can be made to: Clay County Emergency Relief Fund: 1426 Kanawha Blvd. E. Charleston, WV 25301 with Clay Co. Emergency Relief Fund in Memo.
