Obituary

Jane Gibson, 78, beloved wife and mother, died Thursday, January 2, 2014, in Charleston, West Virginia, surrounded by her family that she adored.
She was born Beatrice Jane Miller in Sissonville, West Virginia on May 23, 1935.She was the daughter of Flavious Norman and Nellie Fisher Miller and was the oldest of their five children.

Jane married Harold William Gibson on July 24, 1954.She devoted her life to caring for her husband and their three children, Harold "Skip" Gibson, Jr., V. Dawn Gibson Atkinson, and J. Edward "Eddy" Gibson. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Deborah, Mark Atkinson, and Cathy.

Additionally she is survived by nine grandchildren, Jennifer Gibson Flinn, Ashley Atkinson Swensen, Kyla Gibson Clark, Brittany Atkinson Leavitt, John-Mark Atkinson, Bethany Gibson Scarberry, Micah Atkinson, Alexandra Atkinson, and James Gibson, and eleven great-grandchildren, Josie, Ryan, Calli, Benson, Luke, Raelynn, Reagan, Brooklyn, Ben, Jesse and McKinley. Also surviving Jane are her sisters, Jody Thaxton and Mary Stafford, her brother, Henry Miller, and their spouses, Wes Stafford and Linda Miller, sister-in-law Genevieve Gibson McKinney, special double-first cousin, Effie Miller Sisson, several nieces, nephews and numerous cousins with whom she remained close.
Harold preceded her in death on July 26, 1992.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Marie Dail Herrington, two sisters-in-law, Lynne Kerr Miller and Betty Gibson Colvin Walters, and six brothers-in-law, Roy "Boogie" Thaxton, Bill Herrington, Paul McKinney, Calvin Dail, Andy Colvin and Bill Walters.

A lifelong resident of Sissonville, Jane was involved in numerous community activities. She was a proud graduate of the Sissonville High School Class of 1953 and continued to be involved in class reunion events, monthly and annually. A secretary at Sissonville Junior High and Middle School for 28 years, she also participated in many of their theater productions. She was an avid genealogist and a member of the Sissonville Historical Society she helped produce the books Sissonville: A Time to Remember and two volumes of Kanawha County Cemetery Records. She was also a very enthusiastic NASCAR fan. She loved watching her birds, deer, and other wildlife.

She attended Fisher Chapel Church.

Jane and Harold worked together in several endeavors including operating the Sissonville Hill Climb and the Gibson 76 Filling Station. One of their greatest joys was to drive to 49 of the United States. They especially loved the scenic beauty of Alaska and the West Virginia Hills.

There will be a viewing from 6-9 pm, Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Long and Fisher Funeral Home Chapel, in Sissonville. Funeral services will be Sunday, January 5, 2014 at 2:00pm at the funeral home with Reverend Jimmy Casdorph and Mark Atkinson officiating. Burial will take place at Fisher Cemetery in Sissonville.
