Harry Edward Hanshaw, 86 of Charleston, West Virginia passed on January 13, 2024 at CAMC Memorial Hospital surrounded by family after a lengthy illness. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend.
He was born January 24, 1937 to the late Clarence William Hanshaw and Hettie Scraggs Hanshaw. He was also proceeded in death by his brothers, Clyde Hanshaw of Charleston, Fred Hanshaw of Sissonville, Robert "Bob" Hanshaw of FL, Eddie Joe Hanshaw of FL; sisters, Violet White of OH, Shirley Escue of Charleston; son, Ricky Hanshaw of Sissonville; grandson, Derek Hanshaw of Sissonville; granddaughter, Jillian Bowen of Kanawha City; daughter-in-law, Betina "Tina" Hanshaw of Sissonville and bonus daughter, Pat Boggess of Charleston.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 67 years, Loretta Hanshaw; son, Randy Hanshaw of Sissonville; daughter, Kandi Hanshaw Burdette of Sissonville; son-in-law, Tony Burdette of Sissonville; granddaughters, Kara and Alicia Hanshaw of Sissonville; great grandchildren, Laraya and Jai Bowen of Kanawha City; brother, Clarence Wayne Hanshaw of Charleston; sisters, Gertrude George of FL, Barbara Patton of Sissonville; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
He was a retired truck driver of Teamsters 175. After retirement he then used his love and knowledge of horses to become a successful horse broker.
Harry embraced life with vigor, enthusiasm and vibrant interest in others and the world around him. He shared a smile and heart that was infectious. He most enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends. He was always welcoming and accepting of all and enjoyed sharing his countless adventures with whomever wanted to join him. He loved the outdoors and had many interests including camping and boating at Summersville Lake, hunting, horse showing, harness racing and gardening.
He particularly enjoyed the fun of brokering horses with anyone and everyone around WV and surrounding states. He was the all-around horseman that people would contact for a horse or congregate around his barn for his advice. He loved making friends, deals, sharing his knowledge and stories, and making memories that would last beyond his lifetime. His love for horses was passed along to his family where many memorable moments were created and will continue. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024 at Long and Fisher Funeral Home with Pastor Phillip Crist officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-6 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Sugar Creek Baptist Church (1648 Sugar Creek Dr. Charleston, WV 25387). Flowers will be gladly accepted as well.
