Obituary

Emma Jean Cherry slipped the bonds of this world and entered eternal peace and rest.  She was born on October 3, 1934 and passed August 3, 2023, exactly two months before her 89th birthday.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Noble and Ada Legg; her husband of 57 years, Ralph; sister, Norma Boggess; and a grandson, Rex Allen.

Left to honor and mourn her is her youngest sister, Vivian Berry; three sons, Mike (Shawn), Mark (Robin), and Matt (companion Cynthia Kovach); grandchildren, Emily, Justin, Brooke, and McKenna Cherry; great-grandchildren, Kaori Cherry, Riley Hunter, Gwendolyn Cherry, and Waylon Price; one niece, and a host of nephews.
Jean was "old school", a badge of honor she wore proudly.  Private and reserved, she was a Christian and loved no-nonsense preaching as well as southern gospel music.

She was a homemaker by choice and a wonderful cook.  She never found a cookbook she didn't like.  She often said, "if you leave here hungry, it's your fault!".  She loved holidays, and special occasion dinners which she cooked for many with little effort.  It was her calling.
Her greatest joy was family, and especially watching the little ones growing up.  She loved her flowers, nature in general, and all His creations.

After Jean was widowed, she grew weary of depending on others.  As the years passed, she became increasingly lonely and fell into age progression.  Her body and spirit were simply tired.  She knew she was ready, and it was time to go.  Most importantly, she knew she was Heaven bound.

The family would like to thank the folks at HospiceCare for treating our mother with the greatest respect and dignity.  Your encouragement during this difficult time will always be remembered.  Our family believes the best way to honor her memory is to donate to: HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. West, Charleston, WV 25387.

A special thanks to Shawn for her love and care of Mom during this past month.  It allowed us to fulfill mom's wish to be at home and in her bed during her last days.

Service will be Noon Friday, August 11, 2023 at Long & Fisher Funeral Home, 6837 Sissonville Drive, Sissonville with Reverend William K. Berry officiating.  Visitation with the family will be one hour before the service.
