A. Burton Bailey, 88, of Charleston left this world to join his wife of 56 years January 28, 2008, in SunBridge Nursing Home, Dunbar, with the caring staff by his side, after a long illness.
Burton was born May 7, 1919, in Charleston. He was a mechanic by trade and was a World War II Army veteran, having received two Purple Hearts.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther H. Eggleston Bailey; parents, Col and Victoria Tate Bailey; an infant daughter, Rosemary; three sisters; six brothers; and one great-grandchild.
He is survived by his children, Gaylon Bailey, Forrest Bailey and his wife, Donna, Audrey Morrison and her husband, Johnny, Roberta Lanier and her husband, Paul, and Polly Coon, all of Charleston, Wanda Chamberlain of Columbia, S.C., and Bill Eggleston of Tampa, Fla.; sister, Annabelle Bailey of Charleston; 10 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 31, at Long & Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Garden of Memories with military graveside rites provided by the West Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard, South Charleston.
