Obituary

Arthrow "Art" J. Fowler, 84, of Orlando, Florida, formerly of Parkersburg and South Charleston, West Virginia, died October 13, 2014 in Hunters Creek, Florida after a short illness.

Art was born November 29, 1929 in Staten, Calhoun County, West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dona and Edna Deen Fowler, and his wife, JoAnn Dawson Fowler. He is survived by his sons, Richard A. Fowler and Frank Scott Fowler (Tammy) of Orlando, and two grandchildren, Kristen Nicole Fowler of Tampa, Florida, and Frank Scott Fowler, Jr., of Orlando. He is also survived by his sister, LaVaughn Fowler of Sissonville, West Virginia; his sisters-in-law, Betty Dawson Fisher and Susan Dawson Tinney (John); and brother-in-law, Robert B. Dawson, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Art was a graduate of Sissonville High School (1947), where he was the center on his 1946 undefeated football team and the catcher on the 1947 baseball team that played for the state championship against Parkersburg High School. He was a veteran of the Korean War and, thereafter, began a long and successful career in the construction business, beginning with Anderson Black Rock and retiring as Vice-President of Ranger Construction Industries, a subsidiary of Vecellio and Grogan Inc. Art was described by his colleagues as a "rare find," who had the ability to be tough when needed and kind when the situation called for it. He was trusted and did his best every day.

In addition to being a loving husband, father and grandfather, he was very active in his community. He was a Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 161 of Humphreys Memorial Church in Sissonville, West Virginia. He taught all aspects of scouting, especially outdoor skills. He often led his troops on exciting camping trips in the mountains of West Virginia. He loved the annual family vacations to the beaches of North Carolina. He and JoAnn were great Mountaineer fans and loved to travel to football games.

After relocating to Florida he continued his professional career with the Vecellio companies, supervising operations for numerous asphalt plants. Even after retirement, Art was often called back as a consultant for various plant improvements and repairs. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

The family will receive visitors from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 17, at Long and Fisher Funeral Home, Pocatalico, West Virginia. Memorial services will be held at Long and Fisher Chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 18.
