Adele Louise
McFarland
October 10, 1919 – March 26, 2026
Adele McFarland, 106, of Sissonville, WV, passed away peacefully in her home on March 26, 2026. Born on Oct. 10, 1919 to Howard and Sally Tatum in Charlotte County VA.
Adele was raised on a farm, where she grew up milking cows, raising chickens, horses, hogs, turkeys, and grew all the food the family ate. During WWII, she was a Rosie the Riveter, working at General Machinery making gun barrels and rocket parts for the war. She later worked in a variety of factories, packing cookies and even making medicine pill boxes. She also had a long career in retail working at The Diamond, Kaufman’s, and Macy’s Department Stores. She had a passion for fashion, so helping people look their best was a perfect fit for her. She retired at the age of 92. Adele led a long, happy life. She loved animals and lots of sweets. She was very kind but would still offer her opinion whether it was solicited or not; she was brutally honest and spoke her mind.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Claude McFarland, and her daughter Sonja Young.
She is survived by her sons Danny (Kathy) McFarland and Kerry (Robin) McFarland. Her grandchildren Kimberly (Bruce) Seafler, Matt (Paige) McFarland, Kara (Nat) Moles, Megan (Nick) Turner, and Mary Kathryn (Max) Shavers. Her great-grandchildren Robbie Seafler, Isaac McFarland, Layton Turner, and Paloma Shavers.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Linda Shank and Debbie Ray who helped care for her in her final months, as well as Hospice Care in Charleston.
Visitation will be at 12 pm on Friday, April 3rd at Long and Fisher Funeral Home in Sissonville followed by the funeral at 1 pm with Rev. Randy Ledsome officiating. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Garden of Memories.
In lieu of flowers, people may donate to the Charleston Humane Society.
